One of the things that often blocks me from writing is that I worry if people are going to find it “good” or not. I think, “What are people going to think of this passage? This article?”
Of course, as creators, we want to make things that are good. The problem is when that stops us from creating at all; it freezes us up.
But author James Clear had an insightful take on it. He wrote:
“We cannot predict the value our work will provide to the world. That’s fine. It is not our job to judge our own work. It is our job to create it, to pour ourselves into it, and to master our craft as best we can.”
No matter how hard we try, people liking our work is not a guarantee. We can certainly write things that people might like, like a funny phrase or a profound insight. But at the end of the day, it isn’t our job to evaluate our work; it’s our job to make it.
